Writing the dissertation is a long and arduous process. The first step you must take when writing your dissertation is to accept that it will take a lot of time. This is not something that you can whisk through a few days before it is due. This may be a challenge for those who are serial procrastinators, but accepting it really is the first step.

The dissertation will take a lot of time which is why you must be sure to do this act first:

• Make a plan and stay organized

This means you should take a list of all the things you have to do and start creating a dissertation calendar. The calendar should begin at the due date. And you should work backward from there to include all of the things you need to do before that date. For example: if you need to submit a dissertation proposal two weeks from today, then that needs to be marked in the calendar. If you need to submit each chapter to your advisor for review, and then meet with them later to hear notes on it, you need to work out these dates with your advisor and mark them into your calendar. One of the most challenging components will be to stick to a schedule, so it may behove you to get an accountability partner. This is someone who gets a copy of your schedule and can casually check in on you from time to time to make sure that you did the work you were supposed to for that week or day.

• Write a little every day

This is important too. It is imperative that while you attack the dissertation process you write a little bit each day. You want to be able to write at least one hour every day. You don’t necessarily have to dive right in immediately; for the first few weeks your hour can be an hour of note taking while you research or something. The point is, you want to stay caught up in the middle of the dissertation. You don’t want to leave it alone for weeks at a time only to return to it and have to spend an entire day reacquainting yourself with what notes you have taken and what direction a certain paragraph was going to head. By writing a little bit each day you can overcome this issue.
